Uncontrollable diseases and apocalyptic scenarios are the bread and butter of sci-fi and a distinguished panel is in town to talk on the subject under the heading Dystopia – Are We Doomed? Ham sandwiches unlikely to be served.

That’s just one of the topics up for discussion in a series of geek-friendly events, but it’s the films that are likely to be the biggest draw and the LIFSFFF doesn’t disappoint, featuring a quartet of world premieres, eight UK premieres, four all-nighters and a special showing of the latest X-Men movie, Wolverine.

X-Men Origins Wolverine is on tonight, just ahead of the movie’s official opening, at the Apollo Piccadilly, the main venue for the whole festival.

London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film runs from 29 April to 4 May.
