The 44-year-old actress has signed a 12-month contract to reprise her role as Sharon Rickman in the BBC One soap and can’t wait to return to Albert Square.

She said: “I’m looking forward to being part of the EastEnders team again.

“It has always been very close to my heart. I cannot wait to work with my old colleagues and see what is in store for Sharon.”

Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood added: “I’m thrilled that Letitia is coming back home to Albert Square where she belongs.

“Sharon is a real favourite amongst EastEnders fans and I for one can’t wait until she arrives back in the summer.”

The details of Sharon’s return are being kept closely under wraps but have been described as “epic”.

Letitia – one of the show’s original cast members – is making her third return to EastEnders as Sharon.

Her character left Albert Square in 1996 following an affair with her husband Grant Mitchell’s brother Phil and she then returned as Queen Vic landlady in 2001.

She left again in 2006 following the death of husband Dennis Rickman – the son of her adopted father Den Watts – and the character was pregnant at the time of her exit.
