Charlize Theron loves playing ugly characters.

The South African actress – who donned prosthetics to win an Oscar for her portrayal of prostitute Aileen Wuornos in Monster in 2004 – thinks looking beautiful on the big screen is not important.

She said: “At the end of the day it isn’t about what I physically look like – it comes back to storytelling. If I can find a good story it’s all that matters. I don’t judge a character on what I physically look like.

“I really don’t care about appearance – it’s so secondary to everything else that’s important in life.”

Charlize – who was voted the Sexiest Woman Alive by readers of Esquire magazine last year – also had to play down her beauty for her latest role in Sleepwalking.

The film sees her star as negligent mother Joleen, who abandons her daughter after struggling to come to terms with the abuse she suffered as a child. Sleepwalking, which also stars Dennis Hopper and Woody Harrelson, is due in cinemas later this month.
