Lance Bass came out to Britney Spears to make her feel better about her own life.

The singer – who publicly announced he was gay on the front of People magazine in July 2006 – says Britney was the first person he ever told, on the night she infamously wed her childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander in January 2004.

Lance said: “It was the night of her first wedding, actually. I was in Las Vegas with her, her dancers, her manager, and my boyfriend at the time. Her manager had already gotten rid of Jason – they’d flown him home.

“Britney was really upset about what she had done, and I felt bad for her. I knew she was about to go through a lot of c**p. I felt the need to share something. So I sat her on my bed, and I’m like, ‘Well, I’m gay!’
“She was really surprised. I was always the typical Southern gentleman.”

Lance, 28, claims he has attempted to help Britney through her troubled personal life, but she has rejected his friendship.

He told America’s GQ magazine: “I tried to help her. She’s my neighbour in Beverly Hills. She lives next door. I tried to get in touch with her – I wanted to be that friend to help her.”

Since coming out, Lance has had a long-term relationship with modelling agent Jesse Tannenbaum, and recently split from his reality TV star boyfriend, Reichen Lehmkuhl.
