The 70-year-old actor – who is renowned for his womanising ways – is fed up of playing the field and wants to fall in love, but can’t approach women anymore because he is too embarrassed.

He said: “I can’t hit on a girl in public like I used to. I never thought words like ‘undignified’ would come into my own reflections on myself – but I can’t do it anymore.

“I feel uncomfortable. I don’t think anybody cares what I do in these areas, but it feels a little bit off to me.”

Jack – who was married to Sandra Knight in the 60s and has since been romantically involved with Angelica Houston, Lara Flynn Boyle, Janice Dickinson and Joni Mitchell – said despite public perception, he has always been a romantic at heart.

He told AARP The Magazine, a publication written specifically for the over 50s: “I never minded being a fool for love. It’s nice to have a place to be foolish.

“Ask any old friend of mine, they’ll say, ‘Jack’s pretty smart, but in this area the man is beyond the pale. Don’t ask him anything about love. Or if you ask him, don’t listen to him.’ ”

The As Good As It Gets actor – who has been nominated for 12 Oscars over his extensive career – also said he prefers younger women.

He added: “Every year I like to cover a very broad spectrum. But you know? I’ve been single for quite a long time.”

Jack can next be seen starring alongside Morgan Freeman in The Bucket List, a film about two terminally ill patients who try and find a woman to have a final romantic fling with.
