MOST buses, Tube and overground trains were back in service today after 24 hours of the heaviest snowfalls in London for 18 years.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the freezing weather is predicted by the weather-gurus to last until the end of the week.

Some have complained about Transport for London’s defeatist attitude to the snowfall, asking why a city of this size doesn’t have more snow-ploughs and gritter lorries.

London Mayor Boris Johnson countered this view by arguing that it would be a waste of cash to have expensive equipment waiting around for a couple of decades for their moment of glory.

Anyway, gritters can be more trouble than they’re worth. Yesterday, the one sorting out Trafalgar Square slammed straight into the railings outside Canada House. Part of the square had to be closed as a result.

Despite today’s transport comeback, it is worth checking with the relevant authorities before travelling as some routes remain severely affected.
