POLICE at today’s student march have water cannon at the ready, a leaked memo from an insider at the City of London force has revealed.

“We have also been informed by the City of London Police that if need be they will be deploying Water Cannons,” a Tweet quoting an internal City of London police memo reads.

The memo was sent to New Statesman journalist Laurie Penny, who has Tweeted it in bits to protect her source.

The memo also revealed that police plan to use the despised ‘kettling’ technique in which marchers are held for hours between lines of armed officers.

Officers aim to “[hold the demonstrators] between the Museum of London at London Wall and Coleman Street,” reads a line from the memo.

The threat to use water cannon on the expected 10,000 marchers comes on the back of yesterday’s revelations that police are also eyeing the use of plastic bullets.

Students are marching to oppose the hundreds of millions of pounds of cuts planned for university budgets; the rise in tuition fees to &pound9,000 a year, and the scrapping of the Education Maintenance Allowance, which gives Further Education students a weekly cash payment to help with books and travel.
