IT’S OFFICIAL: there are more Twits in London than anywhere else on earth.

Popular on LondonNet

Twitter founder Evan Williams confirmed last night that the US-born what-are-you-doing networking phenomenon is more popular here than anywhere else, a position London has kept through Twitter’s huge rise in traffic over the last year.

“The UK has exploded for us recently,” Williams told BBC Newsnight, “and London is the top Twitter using city in the world.”

Twitter has an estimated 45 million users worldwide, including at least five million in the UK.

London was already, though unofficially, the planet’s top Twitter city by 2008 when the 140-character message service was in its adolescence.

In the last 12 months, Twitter has seen a 22-fold rise in traffic and still London is out in front.

To back this up we’ve seen a big upswing in the number of readers following LondonNet on Twitter in recent months, following more gradual growth through 2008.

Update: Sadly, later in the day the tweeting world experienced a three hour outage of Twitter. There’s always a chance of a brief outage, but this one was far longer than usual, Twitter have put it down to a Denial of Service Attack. The service, as at approx 4.45pm London time had started to work again (ish).
