JEAN CHARLES DE MENEZES, the innocent man shot dead by police in 2005, will be the subject of a permanent memorial outside Stockwell Tube station, the scene of his demise.

“Knowing his memory will be kept alive in the local community through this memorial is a tribute we could not have dreamed of,” said de Menezes’ cousin Vivian Figueiredo.

The de Menezes family launched a campaign for the permanent memorial back in July and have finally received Transport for London’s agreement today, following a public campaign.

“We thank all the members of the public who have supported us from the bottom of our hearts,” said Figueiredo.

The memorial – a mosaic designed by local artist Mary Edwards – will replace the improvised shrine of flowers, candles and pictures shown in our picture that has stood since 22 July 2005, when anti-terrorist officers fired seven shots into de Menezes’ head in the mistaken belief he was a terrorist.
