“We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places,” was how the former X Ray Specs singer’s Twitter account broke the news.

Poly Styrene, aka Marianne Elliot-Said, had fought a long battle against cancer.

With the single Oh Bondage Up Yours! and the album Germ Free Adolesccents, X Ray Specs were at the forefront of punk and one of the only bands to feature a woman as lead singer.

Despite their reputation and early success, X Ray Specs soon split up. Styrene went on to record solo material and to become a devotee of the Hare Krishna religious community.

“I know I’ll probably be remembered for Oh Bondage Up Yours!” she told BBC 6 Music.

“But I’d like to remembered for something a bit more spiritual.”
