MICK HUCKNALL is top of the list of singers to fill the boots of Rod Stewart when the Faces reform.

The Simply Red star sang for the seminal 1970s band at a recent charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall and is now in the box seat to repeat his well-received performance for the band’s tour, pencilled n for next year.

For a time it looked like Stewart himself would rejoin Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones and Ronnie Wood to form four fifths of the original line-up (bassist Ronnie Lane died in 1997), but those hopes appear to have been dashed for good.

“We’ve been waiting and waiting for Rod to say yes; now he’s finally said no,” McLagan told Billboard magazine.

“He’s busy doing other shit. So we’re going to do it. I’m 64, for chrissakes. If we don’t do it very soon, one of us is going to check out.”

Lane was replaced by Bill Wyman for the gig at the Albert Hall, but the favourite for the tour is now Glenn Matlock, the ex-Sex Pistol.

Another option is to rotate the singer and bassist to keep things fresh.

“I think it’s more exciting, actually, with different singers, different bass players, maybe some other guests, another guitarist or whatever,” said McLagan.
