The iconic skyscraper will lit up in lavender, pink and white – the colours featured on the cover for Mariah’s new album E=MC2 – to celebrate the singer’s successful career.

The honour is also to mark her new record entering the Billboard chart after selling 463,000 copies – the most in her career so far.

Mariah will attend the lighting ceremony in the lobby of the Empire State Building at 1pm today, when she will flip the switch to light up a mini replica of the statue. The New York landmark will then remain lavender, pink and white for the entire weekend.

A press release announcing the event read: “The Empire State Building, a New York Landmark, will shine in lavender, pink and white in honour of a great New Yorker and her number one album E=MC2.”

Mariah first shot to fame with her debut album Mariah Carey in 1990. She has since had 10 studio albums. Her latest record E=MC2 features the hit single Touch My Body.

The Empire State Building, which was built in 1931, is lit in different colours to correspond with national holidays. On Irish national celebration day St. Patrick’s Day, it features green lights, and on romantic holiday St. Valentine’s Day it is lit in red, pink and white lights.
