George Michael says the legalisation of same-sex marriage in California is “fantastic”.

The former Wham! singer – who is in a long-term relationship with boyfriend Kenny Goss – is pleased with the new legislation but insists the decision should have happened sooner.

He said: “It’s way overdue. It’s something that happened almost without a whisper in England, but it was basically because we weren’t that concerned about the word ‘marriage’.

“But because California is a much more religious society, there are a huge number of people who want their unions to be part of something that they can place in their religion, so marriage is much more important in America. I still think it’s fantastic though.”

George kicked off his 25 Live tour in San Diego on Tuesday (17.06.08) – 17 years since his last North American tour.

Last week, the 44-year-old star hinted he was quitting life on the road.

The Fast Love singer announced dates at Earls Court on 24 and 25 August and, which are entitled The Final Two and are being billed as his “last ever UK arena shows”.

A statement on his official website read: “These very special shows will naturally feature Michael’s hits, some tracks not previously performed in Britain, and a stunning new stage set. These shows are truly not to be missed by any George Michael fan.”
