The Harry Potter actor – who starred in the stage play in London’s West End theatre district and is about to reprise his role on New York’s Broadway, as a stable boy obsessed with horses – was surprised at the reaction his nude scene caused.

He said: “Offended mothers were calling up and saying I shouldn’t be doing this, that they weren’t going to go see it.

“OK, don’t see it. They’re treating it like it’s pornography, and it’s not. It’s only seven minutes at the end of the play when I’m naked, and I’m 19 now.”

Daniel also claimed the infamous scene is one of the most “shocking” and “terrifying” pieces of theatre he has witnessed or been involved in.

He added at New York’s Times Talk event, held by the The New York Times newspaper: “You’re in there, and there are these hooves flying around, and I’m naked by that point. It’s terrifying.

“That scene is one of the most shocking pieces of theatre, and I deserve very little credit for that. Those ‘horses’ are amazing.”
