COLDPLAY have denied they lifted the tune for their hit song Viva La Vida from guitarist Joe Satriani’s 2004 track If I Could Fly.

“With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani,” the band said in an official statement, “if there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him.”
Via an LA court, Satriani is suing the mega-successful group for “any and all profits from the song”, believing Coldplay plagiarised “substantial original portions” of his instrumental work.
“A dagger went right through my heart,” said Grammy winner Satriani of hearing Viva La Vida for the first time.
