There had been rumours that executives at Fox – the US TV station on which US X Factor appears – weren’t too keen on Cole’s Geordie accent, but it seems Simon Cowell over-rode the objections.

“Simon is the boss of this show: he gets what he wants and he wants Cheryl,” said a source.

But even with Cowell’s support, it is thought that Cole will be on probation when the show starts in the autumn.

“The money you make on American TV is huge, but there’s also a huge risk,” added the source.

“The way American contracts are gives Fox the chance to opt out if viewers don’t take to her.”

As we reported last year, Cole hopes that appearing regularly on the US X Factor will the launch of her music career in the US.
