THE BBC has denied claims by writer Jimmy McGovern that it monitored shows with an anti-Manchester United bias.

“The BBC has never told Jimmy he can’t write with an anti-Manchester United bias,” said a spokeperson for the corporation.

“In fact, no-one at the BBC has ever told Jimmy what he can and cannot write at all.”

Earlier, Liverpool fan McGovern had pointed the finger at the Beeb’s notorious Compliance Unit, the department that checks for content that might cause offence.

“I ask, ‘What is the point of this unit?’,” he told the Radio Times.

“They’ve asked questions, particularly about the anti-Manchester United bias in The Street. There was this big spiel about a character wanting to shoot Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

“I told them every chance I get I write with anti-Manchester United bias.”
