The What Happens in Vegas star – who married the actress in September 2005 – revealed it was Demi’s indifference to their relationship which sparked his interest.

He said: “Demi was the first person who would call me on my s**t. She didn’t need me. She straight up didn’t need me. She wanted me, but she didn’t need me, so she could put it on the line.

“I’ve literally just been voted the world’s most eligible bachelor and I’m like, ‘I’m going off the market. I’ve found the one.’ ”

Ashton also revealed he is very proud of his relationship with Demi’s daughters from her marriage to Bruce Willis – 19-year-old Rumer, 16-year-old Scout and 13-year-old Tallulah.

He added to Details: “I’m able to give them things their parents can’t give them, because it’s a different relationship. I don’t have all the past.”

The 30-year-old actor said despite Demi being a keen follower of Kabbalah, a mystical offshoot of Judaism, he has yet to subscribe to the religion.

He said: “I’ll use whatever works. I’m not a follower of this or that religious leader. More wars are started because of religious leaders, and people are following and they don’t know why. That is religiosity. That is what turns people into robots.”
