The former Blue Peter presenter impressed bosses at a try-out for the show at Alexandra Palace, north London, last week and she is now set to be offered a £50,000 deal to take part in the skating contest.

A source told The Sun: “Anthea is a household name and someone who ITV chiefs are convinced viewers will want to see on the ice rink.

“She has managed to keep herself in good nick over the years and is very fit for someone who is 52. Also, Anthea has not been on the television for years so is aching to get back into the limelight.”

Other celebrities at the try-outs included Harry Potter actor Oliver Phelps – better known as George Weasley from the wizarding film series – and Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Luke Campbell.

Keith Chegwin recently confirmed he will also be taking part in the new series after dropping out last year when he suffered serious injury during training.

He said: “I was supposed to do it last year but I fell over and broke my arm – but I’m a definite for this year. I’ve just got to lose weight and skate, I’m really worried about it.

“Last year Torvill and Dean said go as fast as you can, so I did and fell over and broke my shoulder and three ribs. The producers had been on at me to sign the contract and it was only after I had that I went on the ice and fell over. It’s a good job I’d signed it.”
