The ‘Barclays Cycle Hire’ service allows registered users the chance to pick up and drop off bikes across the centre of London. Registration for a membership key costs £3, with access fees ranging from a pound a day to £45 for the year.

“I’m thrilled that in the first few days of registration (thousands of) Londoners have already signed up for their very own keys to the city, in the guise of Barclays Cycle Hire membership,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson. “And I hope thousands more will sign up ahead of launch day next Friday.

Similar schemes in Paris and Spain have been very successful. On launch, there will be 6,000 bikes available from 400 locations across the capital, with more planned if Londoners take to the idea.
