CYCLE LANES across London are in the middle of an upgrade and now joggers are to get a piece of the action with a path of their own along the South Bank, near Tower Bridge.
"Outdoor running is a fantastic way of keeping fit, but in busy areas it can be difficult," said TV's Nell McAndrew, who will help launch the lane tomorrow, 5 August, as part of an awareness campaign by the Cancer Research charity.
"The lane is a great way to fully appreciate the benefits of running with great views, fresh air and a clear route so I can keep my pace."
Jogging paths and trails are common in the US, but have yet to take off in the UK, where city space is usually at more of a premium.
A few years ago, plans were canvassed, then dropped, for Oxford Street pavements to feature two lanes for walkers of different speeds.
But it looks like the demand for multi-laned roads and pavements is growing. Already some intrepid, albeit lawbreaking, runners use cycle lanes, where they don't have to negotiate kerbs and dog mess.
Tomorrow's South Bank experiment is only for one day - between 8am and 6pm – but, who knows, it might be seen as a first step on the path to jogging heaven.
Its about time we had out own running lane! I just hope people start to use it now as a showcase and example to other London Boroughs!
