The Flying Lovers Of Vitebsk

Daniel Jamieson's musical drama about the life of Marc and Bella Chagall.

Daniel Jamieson's musical drama for Kneehigh and Wise Children examines the lives of artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella as they move through momentous moments in history. Directed by Emma Rice.

Kneehigh's stunning and critically-acclaimed production of Daniel Jamieson's story arrives in Northampton for five days, and is not to be missed. It documents the life of the Russian artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella, depicting their scenes as works of art as they move through momentous events in history. Directed by Emma Rice.

Perhaps you've seen them floating over a Russian village? Or perhaps you've seen her toppling forward, arms full of wild flowers, as he arches above her head and steals a kiss. Meet Marc and Bella Chagall! The flying lovers of Vitebsk! Partners in life and on canvas, Marc and Bella are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history. Returning to Bristol Old Vic following its critically acclaimed world premiere as part of our 250th birthday celebrations, Daniel Jamieson's The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk traces this young couple as they navigate the Pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other. Flying onto our stage for another summer of love, Emma Rice's vivid production is told with a theatrical language as fluid as Chagall's paintings, and woven throughout with music and dance inspired by Russian Jewish tradition.
