This year, the Women's Prize for Fiction turns 25! Westarted this book groupalmost two years ago with Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, the 2018 winner. To celebrate, we are renaming our group and changing ourselections to include some winners from the past 25 years. This month, we'll be reading A Crime in the Neighbourhood by Suzanne Berne, which won in 1999.In the long hot summer of 1972, three events shattered the serenity of ten-year-old Marsha's life: her father ran away with her mother's sister; a young boy called Boyd Ellison was molested and murdered; and Watergate made the headlines. Living in a world no longer safe or familiar, Marsha turns increasingly to 'the book of evidence' in which she records the doings of the neighbors, especially of shy Mr Green next door. But as Marsha's confusion and her murder hunt accelerate, her 'facts' spread the damage cruelly and catastrophically throughout the neighborhood. If you'd like to join us, we'll meet on Wednesday 15th Aprilat 6pm in our Fiction section on the 1st floor. It's free to come along. Please email [email protected] if you need more information!
