British Towns Book Group

Our brand new British Towns book group meets on the last Monday of every month. This month we'll be reading The Librarian by Salley Vickers.

Following on from the Scottish Decades Book Group of last year and the Muriel Spark Reading Group in 2018,in 2020we're branching out geographically with the brand new theme ofBritish and Irish towns! This month we'll be reading The Librarian by Salley Vickers. Sylvia Blackwell, a young woman in her twenties, moves to East Mole, a quaint market town in middle England, to start a new job as a children's librarian. But the apparently pleasant town is not all it seems.A work of fiction that also reflects Salley Vickerss own lifelong love of literature,The Librarianbrims with references to favourite novels from childhood onwards (readers will appreciate the accompanying list of all the fiction mentioned in the book).Carrying echoes of Penelope Fitzgerlands The Bookshop and Muriel Spark'sThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, its a book about love, education and the relationship between an individual and a community. Most of all, however, it is a book about the ways in which reading can shape and foster a life.
