Fourteen-year-old King Richard II is ill-equipped to rule a nation that has been decimated by the plague. A regency council including Lord High Treasurer Sir Robert Hales, Archbishop of Canterbury Simon Sudbury and judge Robert Bealknap makes decisions when the monarch is “indisposed”. In the king’s name, the council increases taxes on the poor, including a ploughman, who lost his wife and two children to the Black Death.

Raised in Tengboche, Tenzing Norgay dreams from an early age about climbing Everest but he is considered an outsider by the Sherpa community. Bolstered by the unwavering support of his wife Dawa, he persuades Jill Henderson, Honorary Secretary of the Himalayan Club, to give him a chance. He proves his worth and joins the 1953 British attempt, agreeing to lead the Sherpas on the condition that he is allowed to climb alongside the likes of Edmund Hillary, Charles Evans and George Lowe.
