“I’ve loved Posy Simmonds’ work for a longtime,” Stephen Frears, “I’ve got a tremendous cast and crew. Tamara Drewe is a terrific story. Fingers crossed, we can do it justice.”

The film, a Ruby Films Production, will be produced by Alison Owen (The Other Boleyn Girl, Elizabeth) and Tracey Seaward (The Constant Gardener, The Queen), with Paul Trijbits, Sharon Harel, Scott Rudin and Christine Langan of BBC Films as Executive Producers.

London-based sales agent WestEnd Films are handling worldwide sales and co-financing with the support of UK Film Council’s Development and Premiere Funds and BBC Films, who developed the project with Ruby Films.

Tamara Drewe has been adapted by Moira Buffini from Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel and Saturday Guardian strip, and is a modern-day take on the Hardy classic, Far From The Madding Crowd – a story of love and lust in a rural idyll. Arterton will play Tamara, the ultimate modern girl returning to her country home – and her past. Once a shy, ugly teenager, she reinvents herself as a smoldering femme fatale, kicking up a storm of envy, lust and gossip wherever she goes.

Cinematographer Ben Davis (Kickass, Stardust), editor Mick Audsley (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Dangerous Liaisons), production designer Alan Macdonald (The Queen, Cheri) and costume designer Consolata Boyle (The Queen, Cheri)and composer Alexander Desplat (The Fantastic Mr Fox, Coco Avant Chanel) have all boarded the project.
