The prince – known as Sub-Lieutenant Wales – had to jump into the sea in Portland harbour, Dorset, England, along with eight other recruits and await rescue.

Wearing a lifejacket, William swam 20m to a life raft and climbed in, where he awaited being winched 6m to a helicopter. William began his two-month stint with the navy earlier this week following successful attachments to the army and RAF.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old prince came in fourth place in a Cancer Research poll to find the man most women fantasise about while working out.

Former James Bond star Sean Connery, 71, topped the list, beating off competition from second placed David Beckham, 33, 41-year-old chef Gordon Ramsay, who came third and the prince. Music mogul Simon Cowell, 48, came fifth.
