Princes William and Harry are planning a dangerous 1,000-mile motorbike trek across Africa.

The trip will raise money for Harry’s charity Sentebale, which helps orphans and AIDS victims in Lesotho, a landlocked country in South Africa.

A source told the Daily Mail: “William owns a 175 mph Honda Blackbird and is a keen motorcyclist, so he couldn’t turn down the invitation from Harry.

“People are saying it will be difficult for them to get time off from the army at the same time, but although they won’t officially acknowledge it yet their regiment the Blues and Royals has already granted them leave.”

The princes are yet to plan their route across the continent, but they are certain to encounter tough terrain and dangerous drivers along the way. Travel advice from the British government’s Foreign Office also warns that armed carjackings are on the rise in Lesotho, which will be included on the trip.

It is believed the royal pair will require at least six protection officers to travel with them, with security costs for the trek costing the British taxpayer in excess of UKP100,000.

Both princes have travelled to Africa before. Harry’s on/off girlfriend Chelsy Davy hails from Zimbabwe, and the pair have made frequent trips around the region from her home in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 2001 William spent more than three months travelling around the continent learning about its wildlife and environment as part of his gap year prior to attending Scotland’s University of St. Andrew’s.
