The US comic is returning to the UK stage for the first time in 25 years to appear in a production of We Are Most Amused, a variety show to mark the prince’s landmark birthday.

The event on November 12, which will be attended by Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will also feature British comic stars John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson.

A statement from ITV, who are televising the show, said: “The line-up will bring together the very best in comedy talent – from much-loved established names to fresh young acts from the stand-up circuit.”

Monty Python star Cleese has promised to perform something “extra special” for the prince, while Williams has revealed the US Presidential race inspired him to return to stand up.

He joked: “It’s an election year, which is basically Christmas for stand-up comics.

“I figured I should get my a**e on the road while the shrub [George Bush] is still in office.”

Other acts taking part in the show, which will donate money from ticket sales to the Prince’s Trust, are to be announced later this month.

Tickets for the show, which will take place at the New Wimbledon Theatre, go on sale today (01.10.08).
