The queen had originally planned to meet 62-year-old Squadron Leader John Beard, who was suffering from bowel cancer, at Lincolnshire’s RAF Holbeach where he managed a bombing range.

Unfortunately, Beard lost his battle to the disease last December, but the queen still kept her promise and arranged to met Beard’s family at the base instead.

The queen arrived by helicopter yesterday before watching a fly-past by four Tornado planes which dropped dummy bombs and fire machine guns. She was then given a private tour around the base by Beard’s wife Jean and their children.

The 81-year-old queen completed her visited by returning to the range where she detonated an unexploded dummy bomb, which had been dropped during a practice run earlier that day.

The monarch also signed a book to commemorate her visit to the base.
