The 27-year-old – who recently pulled out of the Olympics following an injury to her horse, Toytown – was frustrated after horses Glenbuck and Ardfield Magic Star were placed 16th and 18th respectively in the 35-strong field, held at the family home in Gatcombe Park, Gloucestershire.

Anne – also a former Olympic rider – stepped in to give her daughter advice, much to her apparent disapproval.
An onlooker told The Daily Mirror: “Princess Anne wasted no time in giving Zara a good talking to.

“She strode up and flung her hands in all directions. It was a classic mother-daughter moment and looked like quite a dressing down.”

An official source played down Zara’s disappointment at her poor finish.

A spokesman for the Festival of British Eventing said: “Her mother is an immense support to Zara, and she and Zara’s brother Peter were watching her performance today.

“All the top riders are here, and Zara did extremely well on both her horses, finishing 18th and 16th out of approximately 35 riders.”
