The royal decided not to have a party to mark the occasion and instead went about his normal duties.

He presented the Prince Philip Medal for engineering and attended a lunch at the Ritz Hotel before helping his wife, Queen Elizabeth, hosting a reception at Buckingham Palace for education ministers from Africa and Asia.

A source said: “He doesn’t like to make a fuss about his birthday. It’s an ordinary working day for him.”

However, a 41-gun salute was fired in Hyde Park by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in honour of the occasion and an hour later 62 rounds of ammunition were fired near the Tower of London by the Honorary Artillery
Company.

The prince showed no signs of the ill health which has been affecting him recently. In April, he was hospitalised and treated for a chest infection but was later released.
