The Duchy of Cornwall – which provides the prince with his personal income – bought, sold or renovated £271 million-worth of property in the time period.

Sales of assets range from £30 million from a block of shops to £40,000 for some farmland. All in all, sales since 2001 raised £123.5 million.

The estate gave £2 million to Oval cricket ground for a new stand, and a new Welsh estate belonging to Charles and his wife Camilla – the Duchess of Cornwall – was given £1.3 million.

Interior designer Annabel Elliot – Camilla’s sister – received over £300,000 to renovate the duchy’s holiday cottages on the Isles of Scilly.

The Duchy of Cornwall funds all Charles’ private spending and some of his official and charitable work.

The prince is banned from profiting from the sale of the duchy’s assets, but can make money from it’s yearly income. Charles pays 40 per cent tax on anything he makes from the estate.

The duchy consists of about 54,521 hectares of land, most of which is in south-west England.

It is valued at around £647 million, and in 2007 the prince’s income from it after tax was £12.8 million.
