Prince Charles was “horrified and embarrassed” when he found out he was to be made Prince of Wales 50 years ago.

The 59-year-old royal admitted his shock at the announcement, which he heard while watching a TV broadcast of his mother Queen Elizabeth at school.

He said: “To my total embarrassment I head my mama’s voice. The other boys turned and looked at me and I remember thinking, ‘What on earth have I been let in for?’

Charles was a pupil at Cheam Preparatory school in Berkshire, England, when he was summoned to the headmaster’s sitting room to watch the monarch’s broadcast at Cardiff in 1958.

But the prince also said the role was one of the “greatest privileges”. He added: “I have tried my best.”

The Prince of Wales – who awarded pop princess Kylie Minogue with an OBE for services to music yesterday (03.07.08) – is celebrating his 50th anniversary since his appointment.
