The president and his new wife Carla Bruni will were due to stay at royal residence Windsor Castle in Berkshire for two nights, but have had to cut back their visit on March 26.

Sarkozy’s spokeswoman said: “The latest change to the plan is he is leaving on March 27, not early on March 28. He is here for two days and he is only staying one night.”

Royal officials stressed the move is not being considered a snub, and will not affect the business or ceremonial elements of the visit.

A spokesman for London’s Buckingham Palace said: “It isn’t a problem at all. We try to accommodate our guests in any way we can.”

Sarkozy’s visit will include a formal state banquet and a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
