Prince Harry believes his late mother Princess Diand would be proud of him fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The 23-year-old royal – who is being “immediately” withdrawn from the war-torn country after details of his secret deployment were leaked 10 weeks into his tour – thinks Diana was probably “having a giggle” about her son’s situation.

He said: “Hopefully she would be proud of me. She would be looking down having a giggle about the stupid things that I’ve been doing, like going left when I should have gone right, finding myself in an awkward position earlier today!”

The young prince, who is a second lieutenant in the British Army’s Household Cavalry, also revealed his 25-year-old brother Prince William wrote to him telling him their mother would definitely be proud.

Harry explained it was his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who originally told him he would be going to Afghanistan.

He said: “She was very ‘pro’ me going – I think she’s relieved that I got the chance to do what I wanted to do. She’s a very good person to talk to about it all.

“Her knowledge of the army is amazing for a grandmother – I suppose it’s slightly her job. She was actually the one who told me I was going.”

However, Harry’s on/off girlfriend Chelsy Davy has not been coping with her beau’s deployment too well.

A source close to the couple told The Sun: “There have been many times in the past few weeks when Chelsy has sobbed down the phone to Harry.

“Like any girlfriend with someone they care about serving on the frontline, her emotions are all over the place. But she’s had to be strong for Harry’s sake. In the past three months, it’s fair to say Chelsy has been his rock.”
