Elizabeth Buchanan, who has worked for Charles for a decade, will quit her post at the end of the year to run her own organic farm.

Charles’ principal private secretary Sir Michael Peat said: “Elizabeth is leaving at Christmas after more than 10 happy and brilliant years with the household. She is just about the best private sectretary I have known.

“It will be a blow for us all. But her father died last year and she has decided her farm in Sussex needs more of her time. Their Royal Highnesses will miss her greatly.”

Her departure has come as a shock as she was expected to become Charles’ prinicpal private secretary next year because Peat is set to resign when he turns 60.

The 46-year-old – who was once said to have “a bit of a crush” on the prince – reportedly endured a strained relationship with the Charles’ wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

A source told the Daily Mail: “Camilla simply loathed her. She couldn’t bear Elizabeth’s gushing behaviour around the prince, which she thought quite ridiculous.

“She also disliked what she saw as Elizabeth’s habit of always putting herself at Charles’ side at official functions and them being pictured together. It infuriated her.”
