The royal – who reaches the landmark on 14 November – will be honoured by a variety of musical superstars at the concert, which will be broadcast on UK TV network ITV.

An ITV insider said: “It is early days, but Prince Charles will join us for his birthday. We are still discussing the details, but it is likely the event will be studio-based with lots of Prince Charles’ favourite acts, instead of a big concert outdoors.

“It’s a great honour for ITV to cultivate this relationship with Prince Charles.”

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music, is also said to be preparing a piece of music especially for the concert.

Peter also revealed he has given Charles the opportunity to have a hand in performing the piece, but the royal is said to be less than keen.

He said: “I did ask if the prince would like to perform in it, but he joked that he gave up the cello when he joined the Navy!”
