Prince Charles’ little-known “intimate friendship” with Lady Tryon is to be explored in a new Channel 4 documentary.

The new programme will focus on the prince’s relationship with the Australian socialite, nicknamed ‘Kanga’, which allegedly took place while Charles was romancing his current wife Camilla in the 70s. Kanga later became nanny to Princes William and Harry.

Kanga is said to have been ostracised from royal circles after talking publicly about her relationship with Charles. She died of septicaemia in 1997, just three months after the tragic car crash which killed Charles’ first wife Princess Diana.

The show’s executive producer Fi Cotter Craig told the Broadcast website: “Despite Kanga’s wealth and privilege her life was ultimately tragic, but she clearly touched everyone she met with her enthusiasm, joie de vivre and charm. This documentary also sheds light on an interesting but largely unknown chapter of the Prince of Wales’ life.”

Channel 4 Commissioning Editor Julia Harrington added: “Up to now all the emphasis has been on Camilla, while Kanga’s story has been largely forgotten. This film casts new light on Prince Charles in this fascinating period.”
