The show’s writer and producer Russell T Davies has revealed the heir to the throne had snubbed his offer to make a cameo in the popular sci-fi series – which stars David Tennant as the time-travelling Doctor.

Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Russell revealed he wrote to Clarence House asking “big fan” Charles to appear in an episode, adding: “He turned us down, the miserable swine.”

However, a royal spokesperson says Charles, 59, was not aware of the offer.

The spokesperson explained: “A letter was sent into the Prince of Wales’ office and was dealt with on his behalf. We receive many requests and it’s impossible to accept them all.”

Previous guest stars on Doctor Who include singer Kylie Minogue, actress Felicity Kendall and comedienne Catherine Tate, who impressed show bosses so much she was later given a regular role as the Doctor’s assistant.
