The princess – who had been dating Dodi for about 10 weeks before they were both tragically killed in a car crash on August 31, 1997 – was not serious about her new romance and was still in love with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, according Diana’s friend Lady Annabel Goldsmith.

Lady Annabel told the jury at London’s High Court: “She was in love with Hasnat Khan. Of her romance with Dodi, I felt she was still on the rebound from Hasnat Khan.”

Lady Annabel confirmed that in an earlier statement she had said she felt the princess – whose relationship with Hasnat ended just weeks before she started dating Dodi – was “trying to make Hasnat Khan jealous”.

Lady Annabel also said it was “impossible” that Diana could have been pregnant when she died.

She said: “There was a reason for that belief. I’m confident, on the face of it, that she would not have been pregnant.”

Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al Fayed, has always claimed the princess and his son were murdered by the British establishment as they were about to announce their engagement and Diana was pregnant.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed French police investigating the car crash never suggested it was anything other than a tragic accident. Retired Scotland Yard Detective Chief Superintendent Jeff Rees – who acted as the main liaison with officers in Paris – said he repeatedly asked the French police about the possibility of foul play, but insisted: “The answer was always an unequivocal ‘No.’ ”
