The 58-year-old royal arrived to launch the finished 46-acre Liverpool One development, which includes shops, a 14-screen cinema and a terrace lined with restaurants.

Joanne Jennings, Chief Executive of Liverpool One, said: “It’s wonderful to finally be able to give people full access to the areas that have been under construction for so long.

“Liverpool One has been a phenomenal success for us, the retailers, and the city as a whole since Phase One launch back in May.”

The festival featured performances from street artists and musicians and ended with a firework finale.

Gerald Grovesnor, the Duke of Westminster, who was also at the opening, said: “I am delighted that so many of you are here today to join in celebrating what for Grosvenor, our fund partners, Liverpool council and of course the people of Liverpool is a landmark occasion.”
