REFUGEES are happy with the welcome they receive from British people, according to a new survey.

More than half say they are treated well by home-grown people they meet and the refugees respond in kind by making British culture their own: favourites include royal duo the Queen and Princess Diana, British TV and David Beckham.

Perhaps inspired by the injured football icon, three-quarters of refuges even say they are supporting England for the World Cup.

Only 18% thought Brits didn’t welcome asylum seekers. Since the vast majority of refugees head for London, we can take a pat on the back and quote this survey when anyone says London is unfriendly.

“This is a very positive poll,” said Jill Roberts of charity Refugee Action, who commissioned the poll.

“It’s clear that the day-to-day experience of asylum seekers is broadly defined by public tolerance and acceptance, not suspicion or hostility.

“Refugees obviously continue to face significant challenges, but the fact that they find British people so welcoming is hugely encouraging.”
