HUNDREDS of protesters descended on Heathrow today as the airport’s new Terminal 5 welcomed the public for the first time.

The alliance of local campaigners and environmental activists marked the start of Heathrow’s new era by staging what they called a “flash protest” on the day passengers from a British Airways flight from Hong Kong arrived at T5.

Though they are obviously too late to prevent T5 itself, campaigners are keen to make their point against plans for further expansion of the airport which include a third runway and a possible sixth terminal.

There were a few glitches at T5, with some arrivals desks not operating properly, but British Airways put the problems down to the transition from other terminals.
