Big names signed up to give their personal take on London so far include Jeffrey Archer, Michael Nyman and Renée Zellweger.

As well as information on every street in town and London’s history going back 2,000 years, London – A City Through Time (price £9.99) also has audio and video clips and input from the Museum of London.

“Reading an encyclopaedia has been reinvented, making it an interactive, multimedia, fully connected experience,” said James Long, of Pan Macmillan, the app’s publishers.

Naturally, there are loads of other London-themed apps around – as well as some pretty good London websites, obviously – some of which have been highlighted here, while apps related specifically to the 2012 Olympics are rounded up here, by gadget experts T3.
