NEARLY 800 years after the first gig, tomorrow (Saturday) sees the annual Lord Mayor’s Show parade through the streets of London.

As well as the usual floats and pageantry, this year’s event features an RAF flypast and is to be kickstarted by a one mile race of the best young runners from London’s boroughs, with the famous procession finished off with a bang in the form of a huge firework display.

Not to be confused with the plain old Mayor of London – that’s Boris Johnson – the Lord Mayor of London represents businesses in the City of London financial district, albeit in a primarily ceremonial capacity these days, and has ‘shown’ himself to fellow Londoners since 1215.

The Lord Mayor’s Show is London’s biggest non-Royal bit of pageantry and regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of onlookers. This year’s new Lord Mayor is to be Alderman Nick Anstee, the 682nd to take the post.
