OVER 600,000 people have now registered for Virgin’s WiFi service on London Underground, with plenty more expected to follow after more stations join the scheme later this year and then the company plans to conquer London’s streets.

Currently, 80 of London’s busiest stations are wired up to the wireless scheme; by the end of 2012, the target is for 120 to be plugged in.

Underground WiFi was launched in June as a free service, but will soon carry a charge for non-Virgin customers, though that may depend on what deals Virgin and phone companies like O2 and Vodaphone can thrash out.

For the future, Virgin plans to bring in a similar service above ground on London’s streets.

“We’re very interested in taking flexible elements, fibre coverage, lamp poles, for mobile network operators to use with ease,” said Kevin Baughan, Director of Metro Wireless at Virgin Media Business.
