It’s true that half of those are for one band – Coldplay – but the soft-rockers get ample support from fellow Londoners Adele (pictured), up for four gongs, Estelle, Leona Lewis and MIA.

By our calculations, the next best Grammy city is New Orleans with eight nods, but they are all down to Lil Wayne.

Coldplay, who met at University College London, are listed for three of the most prestigiuous awards – Album of the Tear for Viva La Vida, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, both for Viva La Vida. For the latter two, they’ll be up against Tottenham’s Adele, with Chasing Pavements.

Leona Lewis and MIA are also in with a shout of bagging the Record of the Year prize with Bleeding Love and Paper Planes respectively and Estelle is slated for Song of the Year for American Boy.

The rest of the Britain did quite well too, notching nominations from the likes of Duffy, Radiohead and Robert Plant. The 51st Grammy awards ceremony takes place on 8 February 2009 in LA.
