LONDON Fashion Week was opened today, 19 February, by Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown, against an unusually sombre background to an event that majors on extravagant frivolity.

Brown said it was a “reflective time with sadness at the passing” of leading light of British fashion Alexander McQueen, who took his own life last week.
Then there’s the Haiti earthquake disaster, which drew the best out of the fashionistas last night at the Fashion for Relief catwalk show, organised by Naomi Campbell.
“Fashion is universal, personal and touches everyone,” said Campbell.
There was one particularly poignant moment when the two tragedies, universal and personal, joined together in the shape of Kate Moss, who came down the runway in a McQueen dress.
Not that there won’t be room for London’s traditional edginess.
Designers like Mark Fast, Christopher Kane and Jenny Peckham will make sure of that and there’s innovation on the tech side, with much of LFW beamed live across the internet.
London Fashion Week continues until Tuesday 23 February.
