In 2008 – it’s eighth year of operation – the 135-metre (440ft) observation wheel attracted 3.85 million passengers. Merlin claim that last year’s success came in part thanks to a surge in European visitors, no doubt boosted by the weakness of the pound compared to the euro.

The financial figures published today show that total revenue was up 6 per cent to £52 million, while operating profits rose 15% to 24.68 million helped by a revenue per passenger rise of eight per cent.

Flight prices have edged up over the years and are now approximately 70 per cent higher than when the Eye launched back in 2000. A half-hour trip on the London Eye currently costs £17.50 for adults.
